Hot dog is a popular type of sausage usually served in a sliced bun. The history of hot dog is difficult to ascertain, as sausage in general was made by early humans long before "hot dog" came to prominence. The word "dog" had been associated with sausage since 1884 due to nasty accusations that sausage makers used dog meat in making sausage. Though largely not true, the word evolved and "hot dog" was coined in reference to a popular type of sausage.
