WIKIPEDIA:
Macaron is a sweet meringue-based confectionery usually with fillings. Its name is derived from the Italian word "maccarone" or "maccherone". Although predominantly macaron is a French confection, there has been much debate about its origins. Some believe it was created in 1791 in a convent in France. While some have traced its French roots back to the arrival of Catherine de' Medici of Italy who became queen consort of France. She brought her Italian pastry chefs with her in 1533 upon marrying King Henry II of France. This, some believe, may have started the origins of macaron.
