The word "hamburger" originally derives from Hamburg, the second largest city of Germany, from where many people emigrated to the United States. The term "burger" usually refers to hamburger and other similar types of sandwiches. Though mince beef was a valued delicacy throughout Europe beginning in the 15th Century, the American version of hamburger had been around since the 1880's.
