"Sandwich" is named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (a place in England), an aristocrat during the 18th Century. Montagu was not the inventor of "sandwich", but he loved to order his men to bring him "meat tucked between two pieces of bread" while playing cards. (He loved this form of food, because it allowed him to continue playing cards while eating). Others then began to order the same type of food, and started calling it "sandwich". Although the style of eating two pieces of flat bread with meat as fillings, dates back much earlier to ancient times.
