WIKIPEDIA:
Tempura is a Japanese dish of seafood (notably shrimp and prawn) or vegetables that have been battered and deep fried. It was introduced to Japan in the mid-sixteenth century by Portuguese Jesuits. The word "tempura" comes from the Latin word "tempora" meaning "times" or "time period" used by both Spanish and Portuguese missionaries to refer to the Lenten period when Catholics avoid eating meat and instead eat fish (seafood) or vegetables.
